VISAS SECURED

After delays and much wrangling on the half of my travel agent, our visas finally arrived.

The plan: Fly to Shanghai and cross the whole of China, overland, all the way to Kashgar on the Krygyzstani border. Then cross again, overland, using the Northern Silk Road route, back to Shanghai.

It's a bear of a trip, utilizing only cars, buses, and trains. We'll be passing through the hottest part of the country during the absolute hottest part of the year.

Are we crazy, masochistic, or both?

Speaking of the Silk Road... I am reading a book right now that you might find interesting. It's called The Places in Between. It's written by this Scottish guy who walked across Afghanistan in 2002.

Maybe it's just because I'm sleepy, but I forgot how to put in a hidden link. So here it is without anything fancy: http://www.rorystewartbooks.com/

Have a great trip!

I read it already. Great book.

Can't you take a bit of a detour and make time for even a couple days of the olympics?

Seems a shame to be in country( a large one at that i understand, i've been there as well) and miss out on something you might never witness again.

Just a thought......
I personally have almost zero interest in going to the Olympics. I know they're a huge event but I've never gotten into them.

Plus, Beijing will be super expensive and a pain in the ass to stay in.

Would you say the same thing about the world cup? Were you here in 2002?

I was and yes, I never went to a match either. I did make it out drinking though in Haeundae and I can say it was the wildest/best time I've had in this place. Everyone was drunk and happy...koreans were fab, when they were winning.

Then you get the pants down guy, i still have nightmares of that picture and someone has it as an avatar somewhere, perhaps pweb.

I don't blame you one iota for not going.
No. I wouldn't say the same thing about the World Cup. I'd love to attend. But The Olympics? All of that track and field and archery and gymnastics doesn't interest me in the least. Okay, gymnastics a bit - just because I have a thing for fit girls in leotards - but what else? Swimming? Yawn. Target shooting? Nope. Rowing? Sigh... The soccer doesn't interest me since it's mainly under 23. The only thing I'd really get into would be the basketball. I could dig that, The Dream Team and all, and the fact that the game has become really competitive on an international level.

And now that you got me thinking about it. For all of our enjoyment, FIT GIRLS IN LEOTARDS!

Hahahaha.

We're actually planning to try and do a trek for a few days out of Kashgar, time permitting.
Congrats!
i don't know - i'm thinking it sounds like an incredible adventure - have fun!
ahh, man, that sounds fantastic! Looking forward to reading about it!

I think some of those girls are twelveteen, i'm not into that.
None of them are twelve, for fuck's sake. I'm not into twelve year olds.
